Magicka 2 Gameplay
Controls:No key rebinding!:o But they're supposed to be adding it in a patch, or so the devs say theyre working on it.Melee changed from Shift + LMB to shift + RMB, aoe moved from shift + RMB to shift + MMBYou can move and channel spells now. Movement has changed a bit and works like a diablo game.
Magicka 2 is a really good game. Great co-op options, great gameplay and love the magic!
Or wizard wars if youve played that. Where you set a waypoint by left clicking. You can still move by holding left click but your guys keeps moving to the waypoint you were last at.Gameplay:Ice and Fire no longer combine to make a new element steam, although you can still fire them together to create steam. Same with Ice and water, cant create a new element but can still fire ice. This means lightning can no longer be combined with ice or steam.
And those super powerful spells in Magicka 1 are gone. If you know the ones I'm talking about.Changing up your element has become more necessary than before. Enemies have a lot more elemental strengths and weaknesses.
So gameplay has become more dynamic, sometimes. There's still certain spells you can spam to great effect though. But not quite at the level in Magicka 1 had. There's lot of little tweaks and nerfs and boosts here.
I couldn't possibly list them all. There's full wards now that will actually heal you when you take damage of that element. The shield spell no longer absorbs damage and projectiles, but it does reflect beams. Lots of little tweaks, the range on lightning is crazy far, boulders charge slower and dont shoot as fast but still put out some serious hurt.
I'm sure there's many more. Everything feels just a little different.Movement seems to be a tad slower, especially while rotating when you are channeling a spell.
Some have claimed this is to make controllers easier, but that's bogus because you can spin around just as fast with a controller. But I haven't found it to inhibit my ability to kick ass at all.Otherwise, its very very similar to Magicka 1, a little too similar. The vast majority of spells do the same effects. The Magicks are different yet similar and I believe theres less of them this time around. There's now a hotbar where you can assign 4 Magicks of different tiers. If you use the hotbar, theres a long cooldown before you can use that same key again.
You can still summon magicks manually by typing out the spell and hitting space bar. There's now a 1 second cooldown between magick casts. But its significantly less than the hotbar keys.
The hotbar can also be used to your advantage even if your good with magicks by allowing you to bypass element queing and you can also trigger them when the 1 second cooldown is going so you can still do two magicks back to back when your hotbar cools down. The game is still really short. It's possible to beat the campaign in 4 hours if you dont get stuck at any stages. But it is only a $15 game.Multiplayer:No PVP.Instead of game lobbies with server lists. It's all done by dropping in / dropping out.
You pick your chapter and difficulty, it tries to find a game, if it doesn't find one it creates a new one with you as host and sets it as open for people to join. You can keep cancelling and retrying to search until you find someone. The main menu works like the lobby now and you and your friends can get together there if you have some buddies to play with. The netcode is better supposedly. But still has problems. There have been many reports of Lost Connetion and unable to connect, but otherwise it is more reliable than Magicka 1.Teamkilling is still as easy and hilarious as always.Performance:The game looks just as good, runs great on slower machines. And I've seen many people report that it actually runs better than Magicka 1, and still looks a little bit better graphically.
I haven't really run into any bugs. A couple of little note that I wont bother mentioning. A few people have had crashes but this doesn't seem too wide spread. Conclusion:All in all, it's a little bit too much like Magicka 1. Almost feels like it could be a new DLC campaign. But that's ok, as it's priced like DLC. While others have been annoyed by some of the changes like the magicks cooldown and some of the nerfs they've thrown in like removing the super powerful steam & ice + lightning spells.
The gameplay is very similar. If you enjoyed Magicka 1, I'd highly recommend Magicka 2. It's not quite the sequel I wanted as it's so similar to the original. But it definitely fullfills that craving for more Magicka!. I dont remember the exact key presses for maximum power. QFSAAA i think.
But you could combine steam and lightning into a beam that would simultaneously wet the target and deal massive lightning damage at huge range. The other one was where you'd do ice crystals with death and lightning. I think QREASS. I don't know what it was about this spell but it did insane damage. Like 10-20x the damage of the next best spells, but as an aoe. You could instantly kill almost every enemy in the game even when in large groups. And it only took a few hits of this spell to kill any boss in the game. It was basically a win button.
The only good thing about it was it was difficult to come up with experimenting on your own. Luckily I didn't learn it until i actually beat the game. But i remember once it was discovered it spread through the community really fast and all challenge vanished from the game. As every game you could find would have at least one person who knew the spell and could wipe an entire area of enemies or drain a boss in seconds with only average skill. Just want to note that the spell has at some point been nerfed.
I bought the game last weekend because a magicka 2 lp reminded me of it. When casting it as an area spell it takes less than a quarter of a full rock shield. It also no longer seems very effective on enemies.I found the EQFAAA a lot more effective when put on your sword with a lot less risk involved. It can defeat the strongest enemies in the khan chapter (those that take half your life in a single hit when you have a full rock shield on) in a single cast if they stay in it. Put it in the right location and it will come close to vortex in how damaging it can be.
