SPOILER: Seventeen year-old Rhoda Williams receives an acceptance letter from MIT and she celebrates with her friends. On the same night, a planet similar and close to Earth is discovered and called Earth 2. Rhoda drives her car looking at Earth 2 and crashes with composer John Burroughs, killing his pregnant wife and his baby son.

Rhoda goes to prison and four years later she is released and moves to her parents' house. She finds a job as high-school janitor, but tries to commit suicide. She survives, however, and submits an essay to a contest where the prize is a ticket to travel to Earth 2.

Meanwhile the scientists discover that Earth 2 is a mirror of Earth and the synchronicity between the dwellers was interrupted when the planets were seen by each other. One day, Rhoda decides to visit John Burroughs, whose life was destroyed after the death of his family, to admit to him that she had killed his family. However she does not have the nerve to tell him the truth.

There are more than a couple of things going on here. For the casual viewer, this may be invisible to the naked eye. Having said that, if you pay a little attention, you will not only comprehend its core message, you will begin to truly appreciate the concept behind its making. Do not be thrown off by its subtle science fiction elements. If you find yourself questioning its genre, the actual story lies firmly wedged between drama and art. For this reviewer, the sci-fi aspect stands as a metaphor that powers the film's message.

17 year old Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling) has just been accepted into MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Her celebration is short-lived when after a night of partying, crashes her car into a vehicle driven by John Burroughs' (William Mapother), instantly killing his wife and son. Although Rhoda appears to be intoxicated, her distraction comes from a radio broadcast stating the discovery of a planet that closely resembles Earth. Four years later, Rhoda is released from prison; her spirit broken and dreams shattered, she takes up a janitor's position at a local school.

At this point, there are various theories about the other planet. When contact is made, it is established that the other planet is in fact a mirror Earth having entered our solar system from a parallel dimension. Preparations are made to travel to the other Earth and Rhoda participates in a competition to become one of the first civilians to accompany astronauts to the approaching mirror Earth. After cleaning the school for some time, Rhoda approaches John with the intention of apologizing for her carelessness, but loses her nerve and poses as a maid-to-order cleaner.

A music professor at Yale, John has become an alcoholic with disregard for his profession ever since the accident. He buys into Rhoda's pretence and has her clean his house once a week.

In time, she helps him overcome his grief but never discloses who she really is. Just when they seem to be drawn to each other, Rhoda wins the competition to travel to the other Earth. She must now decide between confronting her demons and telling John the truth or escape her past and start a new life on the other Earth. Until this point, the story unfolds remarkably in an easy to watch, evenly paced narrative. As a viewer, I was captivated right from the start. Co-written by Marling and director Mike Cahill, the screenplay has impeccable character detail relating to ample areas that allow us to probe within our own faults and limitations. As the lead character, Rhoda Williams is a bright individual with an even brighter future who throws it all away with just one stupid mistake.

How many of us can look within ourselves and honestly claim that we have never made a mistake worth regretting? If you can raise a hand to that question then you must be a renowned hero, or one very self-righteous individual. Cahill's biggest accomplishment is in Rhoda's character study— An intelligent and ambitious teenager reduced to a confused and troubled adult, but a wiser one having learnt from her mistake. In giving life to this character, Marling is flawless and ironically powerful as a helpless woman fallen from grace.

After this movie, I can only expect that we are about to see a lot more of Marling in the years to come. William Mapother as John is almost as inspiring as a man who has lost everything but the heart to recovery. With nothing to lose, it is always easy to give up on life, but Mapother does an exceptional turn around with John and gives closure to his character.

Kumar Pallana has very few scenes in this movie but plays a vital role in mentoring Rhoda into redemption. He does this without much dialogue but with uncanny screen charisma.

As a debut directorial, Cahill also gets top credit for the picture post-card cinematography. Beautiful would be an understatement. We have cinematography dependent films with similar themes in GATTACA and SOLARIS, but nothing compares to the way Cahill renders his landscape in this movie. Also noteworthy is the pulsating score, used sparingly but effectively. Additionally, there is a scene on how to make music using a tool that is usually annoying to the ear.

For a shoe-string budget, this film did not win two awards at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival by pot-luck. That alone should silence haters for questioning the film's scientific logic or lack of. This is not about conquering another planet (done to death!) or alien invasions.

It is about redemption through self-discovery and re-invention of one's self esteem by learning from the past and learning to let go of the past. It is about looking at a mirror image of one's self as opposed to assuming everything is perfect. For a drama, this film is as beautiful as it is poetic. Just don't expect any eye-popping special effects. There are tons of other movies catering to that need.

This review contains spoilers of Hello World.
🙆🏼‍♂️ 6/10
Satisfied with Hello World and need more? Here you go. Another world, by its name, the story starts in another world, which is the world of the older Naomi, where the whole story really started.
🎬 Story - 6/10
The story is pretty much fine. It is simply the story of Naomi’s memories. The core of the story is already told in the movie, but here is a more detailed one, including some untold parts. There is only a little problem with somewhat dull storytelling.
🎨 Animation - 4/10
Another World is composed of the same art style as the Hello World movie, having nice environment arts but a poor character animation. Using a 3D-style on characters is somewhat a bad idea for 3 reasons. First, it does not go well with the environment art, next, it mostly came out low-quality and low-FPS, and lastly, it is difficult or unnatural for characters to show emotions or expressions. Overall animation in the Hello World movie is fine, but this Another World is somewhat a bit lower on quality. In addition, since the story is about Naomi’s memories, the animation is rendered in Sepia tone. It’s actually a good idea when the story about the past is rendered in a Sepia tone, but not this case. Staring at the animation with a sepia tone for 10 minutes a bit eye-tiring.
🔈 Sound - 7/10
Overall pretty standard sound. Somewhat a more relaxing and calm version of the Hello World movie.
🕶 Characters - 7/10
Naomi (the older one), who is willing to do anything just for his loved one to come back. He is pretty an amazing and interesting character, here in Another World, the story is mainly focused on him, letting audiences know more about him. Naomi is a character to show almost every aspect. Character development, emotion, background, and motive, all being shown in him. This is really what a character-building should be. However, please note that this is Another World, three 10-minute episodes, which are not long enough to show strong character aspects like in the Hello World movie. Plus, other characters beside Naomi is not interesting at all.
🎉 Enjoyment - 6/10
Another World is an overall pretty fine additional short story to the movie. Basically, a story to understand more about Naomi. It is not really that necessary, but worths watching.

If you watched Hello World and liked it, especially the adult Naomi character, then I recommend this anime. Enjoy!

These shorts contain the emotional development the movie was missing. With the two separated, both feel incomplete.
~ Story 6/10
Adult Naomi's story is fleshed out here. We get to see his feelings for Ruri grow in his youth, and then his turmoil and emotional hollowness as he goes into adulthood.
It sounds great on paper. Unfortunately in reality, it's just not very interesting separated from the movie.
If you watch this before the movie, you will be very confused. If you watch this after the movie, you will feel like the emotional development came too late. The ideal situation would have been to have the heartfelt moments from this ONA inserted where they belong in the film. The story would have been much stronger.
Even if this ONA was meant to be an extended trailer of sorts for the film, the scenes should still have been integrated into the main story somehow.
~ Animation 3/10
There is a huge chunk of this ONA that is just still images with voice-overs or even just silence with text on screen. I thought the point of 3D CGI was to streamline the animation process, but I guess the budget was just too tight.
The sepia tone + vignette was pretty corny and unnecessary. The voice over narration was already enough to make it clear that these are Naomi's memories.
~ Character 8/10 ------------SPOILERS----------
This ONA does what the film should have done for the characters.
Unfortunately, since these emotional scenes were put into a spin-off instead of the film, Ruri's in-film personality is practically blank.
For example, her fear of heights in the movie is reduced to 2 gags (falling off the stepladder & almost falling out of the car). Her attempt to overcome her fear in order to go visit the mountains with Naomi should have been in the movie. The final reveal that she was the little crow would have been much more rewarding. The girl who was afraid of heights flew through the skies to save her loved one. It's hard to pick up this touching detail from the movie alone.
Another example is the scene of her singing in the library when she thinks no one else is listening. In the movie, she goes from aloof to 'love of my life' for Naomi in no time at all. This one little scene of Naomi catching her with her guard down would have done wonders for their relationship to go from strangers to friends.
Naomi himself would have benefited greatly from the character development shown here. The way we get to see his unhealthy obsessive lifestyle while trying to find a way to bring Ruri back would have made his final sacrifice in the movie so much more touching. In the movie we only see the 'exciting' scenes where he fails at experiments over and over. We didn't get these quiet moments where he's sitting in his empty apartment, not taking care of his health, shutting out the world, unable to function. Even him trying to care for a cat only to have it confiscated without a fight was great insight on his state of mind.
On a lesser scale, the research team would have been more lovable in the movie if they had the comedic moments shown in this ONA, along with seeing more of their relationship with Naomi.
~ Overall 6/10
I'm glad this spin-off exists to bring more depth into the characters, but it just doesn't work separated from the movie.

Story - 4/10
Very straightforward and gives a backstory to Quantum World 1 Naomi (Sensei).
Art- 6/10
I know that this comes before, during and after the movie is in theaters and some shots may look very repetitive and I get that. I do appreciate that they made this just to fill in the gaps with a very limited budget considering how all out they do in the movie
Sound- 5/10
It hits when certain scenes need that emotional push for the atmosphere to kick in.
Character- 9/10
This is where I go full ham on this review.
Naomi in this world reminds me of Okabe Rintaro from the Steins;Gate series but to be precise, in Steins;Gate 0 (Im not gonna go into spoilers here for those who haven't watched) but if you know the reason why Okabe is a Sad Scientist then that is basically it (more on that in a moment). The VA portrayed this sad boy beautifully and I can feel his every emotion leading to the film. This evens the moral scale which he has portrayed in the movie and we all see the reason why. You can see his struggle as he survives school and as a lab member. People calling him out directly and indirectly as to why he cant give up and just be happy. Episode 2 was one of the strongest things that solidify this comparison to Okabe .The difference though is that Okabe has his friends to back him up to become his Chuuni lovable self while Naomi has the Quantum storage and his fellow lab members to give him hope as to successfully gather that specific data, pushing the limits of the system and his body and allows him to do his role in the film. Him reading that many books and studying for 2-3 years after her 'death' can show the dedication and sacrifice that he will go through even if it means his own life.
Ruri on the other hand, showed something else that can erase her robot-ish portrayal. She expresses to be sad, tenacious, happy and love. Doing the extra detail of 'climbing a mountain' part in some of the episodes shows that she has depth. Every time her young version is onscreen it feels less and less of a Damsel in Distress.
Enjoyment- 7/10
Some people may find this very boring even before/after watching the film which is understandable. I personally enjoy empathizing the pain and struggles of Naomi.
Overall - 6/10
These short are meant to give depth to the existing characters that we know. If you want to continue watching, then prepare your moral shoes on and strap in. You will stay for the characters than the plot itself. Tying some loose ends in Naomi's character
